The Largest salt lakes in the world
Salt lake should be called a mineral, as such are considered lakes with a salinity of more than 1 per mil (thousandth of). Most often the salt lake endorheic basin, located in arid zone.
We briefly describe here the seven major salt lakes of our planet:
The Caspian sea
The size of the water area is actually more a sea, and quite large (371 000 km2), although the Caspian sea is a closed salt lake, the largest on the planet. The Caspian coast with its sandy beaches, mineral springs, curative mud has good conditions for rest and treatment. However, because of the complexities in interstate relations of Caspian States – Russia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan tourism infrastructure in the Caspian sea is poorly developed.
The Aral sea
Former salt lake on the border of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. As a former call it, because since the early 1960s, the lake started to become shallow catastrophically due to increased freshwater withdrawals for development of cotton from flowing into major rivers – the Syr-Darya and Amu-Darya. Currently, the Aral sea separated into two isolated lakes – the Northern Aral and the southern Aral.
The coast of the salty lake on the border between Israel, the PA and Jordan – the lowest on Earth the plot of land. The water in the Dead sea mineralized to a very high degree, it is her property since ancient times used for medicinal purposes and today attracts large numbers of tourists.
The Great Salt Lake
Great Salt Lake is the largest (5 km2) in the Western hemisphere salt lake is located in the South-Western United States, in a desert area. Here actively produce ordinary table salt and Glauber’s salt is a valuable chemical reagent and therapeutic drug.
Largest in Europe and one of the most mineralized in the world of salt lakes. Located in Russia, Volgograd region, near the border with Kazakhstan. Commercial production of salt from lake Elton was conducted until the late nineteenth century, then stopped. Now here is a balneological and mud resort.

Underwater salt lake
It is a set of objects located in the Gulf of Mexico, the Arctic and some other places of the world ocean. Due to the difference in salinity and, as a result, the density, the flow of oceanic waters in some cases do not mix, and form a clear boundary and form the so-called “banks” underwater salt pond.
